Alyssa and Ryan got married on a beautiful 80 degree day on American Lake in Joint Base Lewis-McChord. We had gone on base a couple weeks earlier to check out the location. It was on a cool and cloudy weekday so there weren’t many people out on the lake. We planned to take photos at an adjacent boat launch area because it had some beautiful spots. The wedding came and the hot weekend brought tons of people with cars parked all along where we had planned to take photos. It was definitely worrying at first but creative positioning can be an amazing thing. You can’t tell at all in the photos that just off camera there are dozens of trucks as well as people swimming, boating, and fishing! I think it’s important to not be too quick to give up on something because of less than ideal circumstances. Limitations often breed creativity and innovation. Sometimes amazing shots that wouldn’t have happened otherwise can come from things like rain, power outages, harsh lighting, or cramped spaces.
The rest of the wedding and reception went very well and had a relaxed, fun vibe to it. I always have fun taking photos of dancing and the ones toward the bottom of the page are some of my favorites. The afternoon sun dipped down at the right angle to flood onto the dance floor. I balanced the back lighting with a flash for some awesome results. Alyssa and Ryan were great to get to know and work with. I wish them all the best in their new life together!
