The morning of Maya’s shoot had some on and off light rain.  I was really glad that they were okay with braving the weather because the morning reiterated why I love rainy day shoots.  The light always seems to look amazing and I just love how everything looks in the rain.  We used a clear umbrella I bought a couple years ago.  It lets plenty of light through and doesn’t obscure backgrounds as much as a regular umbrella.

We met up on Antique Row in downtown Tacoma. I love all the colorful buildings and walls.  They make for really interesting and varied backdrops.  I’ve found that something to look out for with these big colorful walls is to make sure that the person you’re taking photos of doesn’t get lost in the backgrounds.  They should be framed within them in a way that brings your attention to them, rather than to the backgrounds themselves.  It’s also even more important than usual to remember to move in close as well to keep the focus on your subject.  To many long shots and it can become more about the setting than the person.
